A new bill would require hound hunters to have an additional permit to hunt with dogs in Virginia

According to WRIC 8 News. a proposal for hound hunting with dogs that help them find game is making its way through the Virginia General Assembly. If the bill passes, hound hunters will need a permit.

Permit to hunt with dogs

All hunters already must have a permit to hunt. The new proposal requires them to have an additional permit to hunt with dogs.

The budget amendment. HB 30 states:

“The Department of Wildlife Resources shall develop a permit no later than October 31, 2024, that will be required for any person who hunts, chases, or pursues any game animal or nuisance species with a dog.”

Getting the required permit is free of cost after a form is completed and given to the Department of Wildlife Resources.

Controversial proposal

The proposal is controversial because the subject has come up in recent weeks after three hunting dogs were killed in King and Queen County and as the Department of Wildlife Resources continues to review the findings from a recent study from members of the University of Virginia.
