Texas and Florida Lawmakers Have a Beef With Lab-Grown Meat

Arizona and Virginia are considering labeling requirements for cultivated meat, while Texas and Florida are considering outright bans

Italy banned lab-grown meat in November and now Texas, Florida and other states in the U.S. are taking aim at the burgeoning cultivated meat industry after U.S. food regulators cleared it for human consumption last fall.

Lawmakers in Texas and Florida introduced legislation late last year that bans the production, sale or distribution of cultivated meat altogether. In other states, lawmakers are looking to ensure meat grown in a lab or bioreactor is clearly labeled.

And on Friday U.S. Sens. Jon Tester, D-Mont., and Mike Rounds, R-SD, introduced a bipartisan bill banning the National School Lunch and the School Breakfast programs from providing lab-grown meat to schools .

Across the U.S., there has been a groundswell of opposition from farmers, meat producers and some politicians against the nascent industry since the Food and Drug Administration approved the sale of cultivated meat late last year.
