A new definition for “Baby Girl” is baffling older generations

Definitions are always changing

Today suggests that the term “Baby Girl” came about in 2021 as way to describe men who are not overtly masculine or who are thought to be cute. Any baby boomer or their children can tell you this is not true. This may be the Gen Z (ages 7-22) term but those words have been around for a long time.

In Virginia back in the day when someone was referred to as a ‘Baby Girl” the words meant just what they implied. They referred to a baby who was a female or a girl who was the youngest or the only young lady in a family. These words have been a term of endearment for generations meaning one of the feminine gender who was beloved and special.

Older folks will probably continue their usage of “Baby Girl”

Most times in Southwest Virginia when I heard these words it was from a proud father. My daughter is my middle child but my late husband referred to her often as “Baby Girl” even as an adult. James Evans (John Amos) on Good Times (1974-179) referred to Thelma ( Bernadette Stanis) a teenager as his baby girl all the time.
