Biblical names are still popular
Daily Progress reveals the top 5 names African Americans in Virginia gave their sons in 2023. Three were traditional names that are Biblical in origin and two were rather unusual. Noah, Josiah, and Elijah were numbers 1,3 and 4. Amir was number 2 and Legend was number 5.
Noah is from the book of Genesis and the patriarch who built an arc and survived the flood that wiped out the entire earth. (Wikipedia). Josiah was crowned king at the age of 8.
Two unusual names are growing in popularity
Amir means commander or prince and has been popular in Arabic nations in the Middle East for centuries (The Bump). Legend was used as a name in the US for the first time in 2010. It has been given to both boys and girls and is thought to be a reflection of singer John Legend (per Nameberry).
