In an unprecedented move that has sparked debate across party lines, the Virginia House of Delegates recently voted in favor of imposing a ban on “assault weapons”. Introduced by Democratic Delegate Dan Helmer of Fairfax County, the proposed legislation is now one step closer to becoming law, potentially altering the future of gun ownership in the state.
House Bill 2: A Game Changer
The legislation in question, Virginia’s House Bill 2, was passed by a narrow margin of 51-49 votes along party lines. According to the bill’s summary, it introduces a Class 1 misdemeanor for anyone who imports, sells, manufactures, purchases, or transfers an assault firearm as defined in the bill. Furthermore, the bill also prohibits the sale and transfer of assault firearms manufactured after July 1, 2024, and bans the sale of large capacity magazines.
