Every state has its own marriage laws. Before you decide to say, “I do” at the altar or in front of a legal officiant, it would be wise to know what the marriage laws are where you live.
According to the Virginia State Bar, there are some legal aspects of marriage in Virginia that might not be the same in other states.
Outdated Virginia marriage laws
Two marriage laws have changed over the years.
- Couples no longer are required to get a blood test in Virginia.
- Couples no longer need witnesses to get married.
Current Virginia marriage laws
- The minimum age to marry in Virginia is 18 for both parties unless the minors have been emancipated by a court order.
- A couple must have a Virginia marriage license to get married in Virginia.
- Both parties must appear in person at the Office of the Clerk of Circuit Court to purchase a marriage license.
- Both parties must show an official ID, such as a driver’s license, military ID, birth certificate, or passport.
- The marriage must be performed within 60 days of the date of the license purchase.
- Engaged couples can apply for and pick up their marriage license at the courthouse and get married on the same day.
