Virginians, your prescription and OTC meds may cause problems in extreme heat

Some medications may increase sun sensitivity

The high temperatures experienced across Virginia could lead to adverse reactions for those taking certain medications. AARP has listed prescription and over-the-counter drugs that may cause side effects if you take them and go out in high temperatures. The following five meds may cause a rash and other sunburn-like symptoms.

Antibiotics, Antifungal, and Antihistamines

If you are taking the antibiotics tetracycline (Panmycin), doxycycline (Vibramycin), ciprofloxacin (Cipro), or ofloxacin (Floxin), you should stay out of extreme heat. Antifungal: The griseofulvin (Gris-PEG and Antihistamines cetirizine (Zyrtec) may also cause problems in the heat.

Statins and diabetes medications

Statins for cholesterol like simvastatin (Zocor), atorvastatin (Lipitor), lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), and sulfonylureas for diabetes like glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide (Micronase) can also cause you to have reactions in the heat.
