African Slaves brought peanut pie also known as poor man’s pie to Virginia where it is a classic

Peanut pie is a classic in the Commonwealth

I love peanuts and peanut butter and occasionally eat peanut brittle. Although the idea of a pie made from peanuts differs from my cup of tea, The Country Cook says Peanut pie is a classic in Virginia.

Sometimes referred to as the poor man’s pie, Wikipedia says it originated in Peru. The Spanish took Peanut pie to Europe, where it spread to Asia and Africa and was brought to America by enslaved Africans. Virginia peanuts are popular, but I just recently heard of peanut pie.

Peanut pie is said to be similar to pecan pie

How could I have lived my entire life in the state without anyone around me mentioning this dessert or cooking it? Parnell the Chef has a peanut pie recipe for those who want to make it.

He says it is similar to pecan pie and widespread in Virginia and Georgia. Peanut Pie is also on the menu at The Virginia Diner in Wakefield, which has been in business since 1929.
