Around 28,000 Appalachian Power customers remain without power across Appalachia

GHENT, WV (WVNS) — More than 28,000 Appalachian Power customers remain without power across Appalachia in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene, as of around 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2024.

According to a Storm Response Update from Appalachian Power, around 28,500 Appalachian Power customers do not have power in both Virginia and West Virginia, and crews from 30 states, including as far as Nebraska, arrived in the area to help with power restoration.

Local agencies gather donations for those affected by Hurricane Helene

The amount of power outages that remain affected by the storm include:

  • Around 22,400 in Virginia
  • Just under 6,000 in West Virginia

Power was restored to 90 percent, or approximately 253,500 Appalachian Power customers, since the worst of the outages on Friday, September 27, 2024.

The Storm Response Update stated that 85 percent of the damage assessment is finished, some of which is being done by drones and helicopters, and crews discovered 583,000 feet of fallen wire and damaged equipment, including 885 poles and 285 transformers.
