Cissy Houston was a gospel legend
Virginia Gospel music fans, the legendary Cissy Houston, mother of the late pop princess Whitney Houston, has passed away at 91. The AP reports that the two-time Grammy winner sang with icons like Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley.
Houston’s daughter-in-law Pat Houston revealed she died in hospice due to Alzheimer’s Disease and was surrounded by family. In 2021, there were 2506 Alzheimer-related deaths in Virginia.
Whitney’s mom was best known for singing with the Sweet Inspirations, which consisted of Doris Troy and Houston’s niece, Dee Dee Warrick. When Dee Dee’s sister, pop icon Dionne Warwick, left the group, Houston replaced her.
Cissy Houston also outlived her granddaughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, the daughter Whitney had with Bobby Brown. The gospel singer was married and divorced twice, first to Freddie Garland (1955- 964) and then to John Houston Jr. (1964-1991).
