A traditional birthday gift for kids and adults in Virginia

Most people look forward to their birthday because they usually get gifts. Some gifts surprise them because they do not expect them. However, some adults and kids in Southern Virginia know exactly what they will get from their parents and grandparents every year on their birthday.

Traditional birthday gifts

Some Virginia kids and adults know that they will get a gift for their birthday, and it will usually be the same as the previous year. However, its value will be different.

Parents and grandparents love to give a dollar bill to reflect the person’s age. A child who is turning 12 knows she will get $12. The dollar amount increases as the child gets older.

Giving a child $12 might seem small, but loving parents and grandparents sometimes do a little extra by putting the dollar bills in a wallet or a purse as part of the gift.

Some adults, on the receiving end of that birthday tradition, continue it with their own kids.

Some children also do the same thing for their parents. I turned 79 last July. I appreciated the $79 I received from my daughter. I smiled and remembered why the dollar amount matched my age.
