Virginia Congressman reveals cancer diagnosis

Two days after winning his reelection bid, U.S. Representative Gerry Connolly announced his has been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus.

Connolly represents Virginia’s 11th Congressional District in northern Virginia, including areas, such as Reston, Centreville, Fairfax, and Lorton.

In an open letter to constituents, Connolly, said he learned about the diagnosis a few days ago. “It was a surprise because, except for some intermittent abdominal aches and pains, I had no symptoms,” he wrote.

The congressman cited plans to work throughout his treatment. “I’m going to undergo chemotherapy and immunotherapy right away,” he wrote. “Over the next few months as I do my job here in our district and on the Hill, I may be a bit fatigued due to the treatment. I hope you’ll understand.”

He also portrayed himself as being in good spirits. “Cancer can be tough. But so am I. I will attack this the only way I know how—with Irish fight and humor.”

He added, “Be assured I’m full of hope and am sustained by the love, support, and encouragement of my family, friends, and of all of you.”
