POCAHONTAS COUNTY, WV (WVNS) — The West Virginia Department of Agriculture announced that a case of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza was confirmed in a backyard flock in Pocahontas County.
According to a press release, the case of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in a backyard flock in Pocahontas County marks the second case in domestic birds in the Mountain State since the global outbreak started in 2022.

The HPAI case was confirmed after a field investigation, sample collection, and testing was done in Moorefield at WVDA’s Animal Health NAHLN lab. The press release stated that the affected premise is under quarantine and measures were taken to prevent HPAI from spreading further, as well as to make sure the commercial food supply remains safe.
