Washington’s Public School Levies: Majority Support Shown in Special Election

Tentative results from Washington’s February special election suggest public school levies, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction reports.

OSPI reports that 159 school districts put 192 enrichment levies andor capital levies on the ballot this month. Another 21 school districts put bonds on the ballot, according to OSPI.

At present, 172 (90%) of the local levies are passing while 12 other levies are just 2% shy of passing. Based on historical voting patterns, OSPI anticipates that 96% of the levies will likely pass.

In Washington, local school districts must provide a matching contribution to obtain school construction funding from the state, according to OSPI. That contribution is provided through a local bond, which needs 60% voter approval to pass, OSPI reports further. Over the past decade, 45% of the bonds in Washington have passed, per OSPI reports.

Preliminary data from Washington’s February special election show that just 7 of the 21 (33%) local bonds are likely to pass, according to OSPI.
