Marathon County man charged in 2024 goat killings after telling deputy he needed to ‘confess his sins’

A cold case involving four goats killed on a Marathon County farm led to felony charges after a neighbor told a deputy he needed to “confess his sins,” prosecutors say.

Eric L. Seelow, 34, of the town of Eau Pleine, faces four felony counts of mistreatment of animals causing death and one misdemeanor count of criminal damage to property. The charges were filed Oct. 2 in Marathon County Circuit Court. Seelow was not arrested. Prosecutors instead issued a summons ordering him to appear in court next month.

The case dates to Oct. 14, 2024, when a farmer in the town of Eau Pleine called the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office to report that someone shot his goats. A deputy who responded found one goat dead in a field with an apparent small-caliber gunshot wound to the back of the head. Two others were alive but badly hurt, one with an apparent bullet wound in the neck and another with a wound near the hip, according to the criminal complaint…
