WEST SALEM, Wis. (WKBT) — More than 70 years after Florence Breitkreutz was lost over the Atlantic Ocean while serving as a naval flight attendant, the West Salem community is honoring her with a new memorial.
Community members gathered today for a memorial service and to honor Breitkreutz with a headstone, bringing renewed attention to a Navy veteran whose story had largely faded from local memory.
“People are remembering her again. For the last 30, 40, 50 years nobody has even brought up her name or talked about her because really she was basically lost to history,” says Conrad Miller of the West Salem Historical Society. “This is a way that she’s being remembered by the entire community.”…
