GOP State Rep Argues Abortion Isn’t Health Care, Says He Knows ‘Better’ Than Others Because He Was a Veterinarian

Republicans on the Wisconsin General Assembly passed a bill Thursday for a 14-week abortion ban

During a two-and-a-half hour debate over a 14-week abortion ban bill in Wisconsin, Republican State Rep. Joe Kitchens claimed abortion is not health care, saying he is qualified to make that statement because he was a veterinarian.

“The question is whether abortion is health care and if you believe that a fetus is a human life, then abortion is not health care,” Kitchens said. “In my veterinary career, I did thousands of ultrasounds on animals … I think I know mammalian fetal development better than anyone here. And in my mind, there’s absolutely no question that’s a life.”

In his remarks, Kitchens said he recognized that not everyone will agree with him and said the bill allows the public to “decide what our morality is.”

Wisconsin currently has a 20-week abortion ban.

The State Assembly passed a 14-week ban by a 53-46 vote on Thursday. The bill will now head to the Senate.
