Dairy grant to help innovation and profitability in Wisconsin dairy co.’s

WESTBY (WKBT) — 15 Wisconsin dairy companies are getting some extra “cheddah.”

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) announced the lucky fifteen will receive a “Dairy Processor Grant.”

The purpose of the grants is to help foster innovation, improve profits and sustain long-term viability in dairy companies.

Nordic Cheese in Westby is one of the companies receiving the grant. They currently sell A2 cheeses which are easier on digestion. Cow’s milk is made up of A1 and A2 proteins. A2 proteins are said to be better for people who are lactose intolerant.

Nordic Cheese says the extra money will help market their cheese and allow them to create new ones.

“This grant for our business will really help us expand this line for us and especially a small business like us. It’s going to be very crucial to help us role out these new products,” says owner Sarah Bekkum.

Gov. Evers agreed to add $300,000 annually to the 2023-25 Dairy Processor Grant budget bringing it to $500,000 to be used each year.  The DATCP received 36 grant requests last year.
