No horse story: Crude campaign joke bad look for Justice Janet Protasiewicz Opinion

Just when you thought some of the bitterness and acrimony from last spring’s Wisconsin Supreme Court race between Janet Protasiewicz and Dan Kelly might be fading, things got, well, quite stirrup-ed this week.

“Horse (expletive)” is a specifically crude way to describe someone you don’t like politically. I can’t say I even know what someone would have to look like for that description to pop into my head. Nevertheless, we now know that there were reportedly some people who used that term to describe Kelly. They were part of a focus group for Jill Karofsky’s successful 2020 campaign against Kelly, who was then the incumbent on the Supreme Court.

To be sure, you can’t control what people say in a focus group and I imagine that it’s fairly normal for things like this to become inside jokes. When Kelly sought the seat again last year, that nugget became crude campaign fodder for Protasiewicz’s staffers. What’s not normal is to air that dirty laundry after the fact.
