LA CROSSE (WKBT) — Wisconsin Republican lawmakers this week approved the legislative district maps that Governor Evers submitted to the state’s Supreme Court.
Governor Evers has until Tuesday to sign his maps into law, but many are wondering why he hasn’t signed them yet.
Though the map proposal came from Evers, almost every state Democrat voted no in the Legislature.
UWL political science professor Anthony Chergosky said Democratic opposition reflects the desire to preserve a governor veto, but it also is a reflection of deep distrust between the political parties in Wisconsin.
Republicans have actively fought against new state maps, so a major flip to support a Democratic governor’s map proposal may seem suspicious to Democrats.
But Chergosky said it’s more likely Republicans are, in their eyes, making the best of the current “political reality.”
“Republicans have bad options and worse options right now. Their bad option is to go with Evers’ maps, and the worse option is to wait and see how the State Supreme Court might decide on this issue,” Chergosky said.
