City of La Crosse awarded catastrophic storm grant from Wisconsin DNR

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — The City of La Crosse has received a catastrophic storm grant from the Wisconsin DNR.

The DNR announced the grants Friday, going to seven communities and one nonprofit:

  • Town of Delavan
  • City of La Crosse
  • City of Middleton
  • City of Phillips
  • City of Sheboygan
  • City of Watertown
  • Village of Williams Bay
  • Friends of Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy

A total of $139,920 was made available for this cycle of theĀ Urban Forestry Catastrophic Storm Grants. This money will be used to address damage from storm events that occurred between June 21 and June 25.

The DNR did not share a breakdown of the grants distributed, only that the most awarded was $29,841.

The grant program funds tree repair, removal and replacement in urban areas following a storm event that warrants an emergency declaration from the governor.

Gov. Evers declared a state of emergency on June 28 following severe storms across Wisconsin. The grant program gave out 20% of its annual funds.

A “catastrophic storm” is defined as damage to urban forests caused by snow, ice, hail, wind or tornado.
