Senator Baldwin and Colleagues Urge Action Against Chinese Data Collection in Connected Cars

Senator Tammy Baldwin and colleagues press Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to scrutinize Chinese automakers over data security risks in connected vehicles.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, joined by several congressional colleagues, has urged Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to take action on the national security risks posed by advanced vehicles with ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This comes just after the U.S. Department of Commerce imposed new restrictions on the import and sale of connected vehicles linked to the CCP.

In a formal letter, Baldwin and other lawmakers highlighted growing concerns about Chinese automakers gaining a foothold in the Mexican market and potentially using this position to evade U.S. tariffs. Their letter underscores how the data collected by these vehicles, including 3D mapping and geolocation information, could be accessed by the CCP, posing a significant national security threat to both the U.S. and Mexico.
