After dangerous freezing rain Monday morning, most in Milwaukee area will have a white Christmas

Area roads could become dangerously slick Monday morning as a weak system is expected to bring freezing rain overnight, according to the National Weather Service.

“It could become a dangerous situation in spots,” said Kevin Lynott, meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Milwaukee/Sullivan office.

He said the weather system will move into southeast Wisconsin after midnight and freezing drizzle could likely develop with parts of the air mass warming up.

With roads already cold freezing rain could accumulate into a thin sheet of ice, especially on untreated surfaces that haven’t been pre-salted.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Monday morning through early afternoon for much of southern Wisconsin.

A light glaze of ice could form and make roads, especially bridges and overpasses extremely slick.

Commuters are urged to drive slow and with caution.

The freezing rain could also affect power cables and power outages are possible.

But once that passes by tomorrow afternoon Lynott said there will be a gradual warm-up with temperatures reaching the upper 30s by late Christmas day.
