Department of Natural Resources hosts Free Fishing Weekend throughout Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – As many continue their beloved hobby of ice fishing on a cold winter weekend, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is inviting everybody to join in.

From January 18 to 19, everybody is invited to go fishing, regardless of age or fishing license status. The DNR is calling it the Free Fishing Weekend , as officials wish for everybody to partake in the fun of winter fishing.

Though a fishing license and/or trout/salmon stamp are normally required, this is a special weekend, however there are still a few regulations in effect.

  • Bag limits
  • Size limits
  • Species restrictions

All other 2024-2025 Hook and Line regulations are in effect as well, and they can be viewed on the DNR’s website .

Most trout streams are open during catch-and-release season on Free Fishing Weekend, though some are closed. Those with questions are advised to review the trout regulations or check with local biologists for information.
