MADISON – It’s never too difficult to convince Wisconsinites to stop at Culver’s, but many found on Monday that a ButterBurger tastes even better when it’s for a good cause.
Customers lined up in droves to patronize one of the 80 Culver’s stores across Wisconsin to support victims and families in the aftermath of the December shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. Although the final dollar amount the franchise was able to donate to the United Way of Dane County’s Abundant Life Christian School Emergency and Recovery Fund is not yet known, scenes from around the state showed just how much communities were willing to give.
In Madison, drive-thru lines stretched down the street, at times so lengthy they interrupted the flow of traffic. Inside the restaurants, some waited close to two hours for their food, chatting with their neighbors — sometimes packed tightly together — and accepting free samples of custard.
Heather Gonzagowski, who visited the Culver’s on Cottage Grove Road in Madison around 6:30 p.m., waited about an hour for her food. Despite the frenzy, she said, no one was complaining.
