A car barreling down a Brooklyn street jumped into oncoming traffic and slammed into a second vehicle, sending it straight through a Carroll Gardens deli’s storefront, leaving glass, merchandise and a mangled hood scattered across the sidewalk, according to CBS News New York. Two people were hospitalized.
A Wrong-Way Driver Sets Off a Chain Reaction
The crash happened just before 8:30 a.m. Sunday at Union and Henry Streets, when a car traveling the wrong way on Henry Street collided with another vehicle at the intersection, according to CBS News New York. The impact sent the second car into the storefront of Garden Gourmet Deli and Grill, shattering the front window and scattering debris across the entrance. News 12 Brooklyn and ABC7 New York both confirmed two people were taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
Police identified the wrong-way driver as 24-year-old Juan Tenorio Ramos, who was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, reckless endangerment and reckless driving, according to CBS News New York. Police sources told the outlet Ramos had been arrested twice already in 2026, including a July 4 arrest on Staten Island on drug and weapon possession charges.
“The Bricks in the Bottom Help”
Deli owner Khalid Sarsour described the moment the car came through his storefront, telling CBS News New York: “Luckily, the door, we got protected by the door, and evidently, the bricks in the bottom help.” A neighbor, Lydia Esponda, told the outlet the timing could have been far worse. “Thank God it was on a Sunday, a holy day,” she said. “That’s the only thing that saved a lot of people.”
Video and photos from the scene, also captured by PIX11, showed the crumpled hood of the car wedged partway into the deli, glass fragments spread across the sidewalk and shelving knocked loose inside.
