He is Staten Island’s greatest Olympic athlete, but 1912 silver and gold medalist Abel Kiviat was known for more than that in his hometown. Excelling on the track, Kiviat, who won numerous national cross country, indoor and outdoor track titles (including breaking the world record at 1500 meters three times over 13 days in 1912) also gave of himself willingly to the community throughout the years as a coach at Wagner College, AAU race director and official, press steward and mentor to many both locally and beyond.
