Male, 17, shot in leg across the street from Staten Island high school; suspect at-large

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 17-year-old male was shot near Ralph R. McKee Career and Technical Education High School on Thursday afternoon on Staten Island, and police are still searching for the culprit.

The incident happened at 12:56 p.m. near 273 St. Marks Pl. in St. George, police said. The New York City Department of Education confirmed that the shooting did not occur on school grounds, but across the street from the school, which has more than 700 students, according to the state DOE.

The victim was shot in the left leg and taken to Richmond University Medical Center in stable condition.

1010 WINS spoke to a neighbor who was awoken by the gunshots, and said he heard at least three fired off.

“While this incident took place off campus, this is a highly concerning consequence of the proliferation of guns in our city,” the DOE said in a statement. “Our students deserve to be safe in their neighborhoods, and we are working closely with the school to ensure students have the resources they need, including support from external violence interruption organizations.”
