Nassau PD: Suspect killed in police-involved shooting, several injured in chase from Queens to Massapequa Park

A suspect was killed, and several people were hospitalized following a pursuit starting Friday evening in Jamaica, Queens. Authorities say two NYPD officers attempted to pull over the suspect at around 11:15 p.m. An alert was put out after the driver took off and nearly ran over the officers. Police say the suspect made his way to Nassau County, where officers tried to block him with their patrol cars at Merrick Avenue and Sunrise Highway. Two officers had to jump out of the way as the suspect continued to flee the scene. The suspect then drove the wrong way on Sunrise Highway, striking additional police cars and a civilian’s vehicle. Authorities say he eventually lost control at Hicksville Road and Sunrise Highway in Massapequa Park. A shooting occurred between the suspect and the officers after he refused to surrender. The suspect was then fatally shot, according to Nassau police. “Officers attempted to get that individual out of the car. A shooting occurred, the individual had died,” said Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder. “He is at a local hospital along with five police officers from Nassau County being treated, a civilian being treated at a local hospital and two NYPD officers in the city area.” The suspect’s name has not been released as police are waiting to notify his family. The state’s Attorney General’s Office was notified about the shooting. Tommy Shevlin, president of the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association, released the following statement: “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those involved in today’s incident, including the officers injured while protecting our communities. The Nassau County PBA remains committed to supporting our officers as they put their lives on the line every day.” ”
