Perth Amboy man charged with fatally stabbing his wife in front of their children

A Perth Amboy man has been arrested for allegedly fatally stabbing his wife in the presence of their children.

Wellinton Leonardo has been charged with one count of murder, one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and one count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone announced.

Authorities received a 911 call around 2:57 a.m. Saturday about a stabbing at a Bertrand Avenue residence where arriving police found Leonardo and his wife, 40-year-old Rosana Rodriguez, on the kitchen floor, according to the prosecutor.

Rodriguez, who had been stabbed, was taken to Hackensack Meridian Hospital Raritan Bay Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead, the prosecutor said, and Leonardo was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for treatment.
