Staten Island photographer launches maternity and newborn portrait business

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — When Alina Reznik gave birth to her son 16 years ago, she booked a newborn session with a well-known photographer, hoping to capture some of his sweet first moments on film. But when the pictures came back, she was disappointed with the result.

“They felt awkward, and my baby wasn’t posed or sleepy,” she said. “I remember telling my husband, ‘I think I can do better myself,’ and he simply said, ‘OK, do it.‘”

At the time, Reznik was a registered nurse at Lenox Hill Hospital, and many of her coworkers were new moms. They became her first clients, and the budding photographer gladly offered her services for free so she could log lots of practice.

“I quickly realized that being self-taught had its limits — I wasn’t improving the way I wanted to,” she said. “So, I started attending workshops with my favorite photographers, learning new techniques and refining my skills.”

Four years ago, she made the life-changing decision to resign from nursing and turn her passion for photographer into reality. Alina Reznik Photography was born…
