Ready or not, NYC’s mandatory composting rules to be enforced with increasing fines for violations

The city Department of Sanitation will begin enforcing fines to residents who don’t abide by the city’s curbside composting program beginning Monday, April 1.

Residents will have to separate organic waste from trash or risk receiving an initial $25 fine from the DSNY. While mandatory composting went into effect in Oct. 2024, the law passed by City Council established a warning period until April 2025.
