Free A/C applications open this month

CITYWIDE — APPLICATIONS FOR THE city’s free air-conditioner program are set to open this month. Lower-income New Yorkers in households with senior, disabled or child residents can apply online for the HEAP Cooling Assistance Benefit, under which the city will cover up to $800 for the purchase and installation of new air conditioning units and fans, along with other expenses. Those who already have modern air conditioning available or who have used the cooling benefit within the last five years are likely not eligible.

The city funds this program in order to mitigate the dangers of heat and humidity for vulnerable residents who could struggle in high temperatures. Payments are first come, first served and demand typically skyrockets when thermometers do, so those in need are advised to apply as soon as possible…
