This park on Staten Island operates without rangers amid safety concerns

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — At a time when residents want to ensure their safety when using Staten Island parks, the Advance/SILive.com has learned Gateway National Recreation Area’s Great Kills Park has been devoid of park rangers for a significant period of time.

Park safety has been on the forefront of residents’ minds following an attempted rape in the city-run Silver Lake Park in early April.

Since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the federal government’s National Parks Service — which runs Great Kills Park — has not established any rangers or park police on the premises, according to sources with knowledge of the situation…
