Staten Island officials call for greater enforcement after truck traffic nightmare

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— Hours after a truck spillover from Port Liberty gridlocked two highways and blocked the only entry and exit point of Goethals Community, Staten Island’s lone mobile home park, Staten Island elected officials called for greater traffic enforcement.

The debilitating traffic jams have long been an issue. Earlier this year, City Councilmember Kamillah Hanks sent a letter to the NYPD and the Department of Transportation calling on signage to be posted leading to Port Liberty in Mariners Harbor, the apparent destination for a majority of the tractor-trailers.

Hanks on Thursday noted that the Department of Transportation did grant her January requests, and is now calling on local police to reimplement a dedicated Truck Enforcement Unit that effectively manages truck-related concerns…
