#fyiSI: How common are turkey vultures on Staten Island? Should I be worried?

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An Advance/SILive.com reporter spotted turkey vultures gobbling up a dead opossum on Hylan Boulevard in early May.

On the bridge spanning over Lemon Creek on Staten Island’s South Shore, two massive turkey vultures took turns diving down onto the street to pick at the carcass of an opossum.

The birds, when viewed from behind by the untrained eye, look as if they could be bald eagles with their massive wingspan and brown feathers — but when they turn, you can see the distinct red head that separates them from their fellow winged specimen.

The vultures planned their time in the street in intervals, waiting until cars paused at nearby traffic lights before swooping down to continue their meal…
