STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Kim Fialo Marino, 65, of Graniteville, a loving mother, grandmother and longtime teacher’s aide known for her outgoing personality and zest for life, lost her battle with a rare and deadly brain disorder on May 31, just 10 days after her diagnosis.
Ms. Marino was very energetic, social and caring right up until being diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, according to her family. The disease is only diagnosed one or two times per million people around the world each year, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Symptoms of the illness can be similar to those of Alzheimer’s disease, but Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease usually gets worse much faster and leads to death, the Mayo Clinic explained on its website…
