Staten Island chef, 39, dies of injuries 3 months after being hit by SUV

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Staten Island community is mourning the loss of Pedro Huerta, a cherished staff member of O’Neill’s Restaurant in Port Richmond.

According to the restaurant’s social media accounts and a GoFundMe previously created to support Huerta’s recovery, the chef died of injuries and complications he sustained when he was struck by a vehicle in early March.

The collision

As indicated in the GoFundMe created by Michael Regan, the owner of O’Neills, Huerta was making his way to work when he was struck by a vehicle just before noon on March 7. The NYPD confirmed it received a call for the collision.

Upon arrival at the scene in the vicinity of Forest Avenue and Decker Avenue, police heard from the 53-year-old driver of a Toyota SUV that he was driving eastbound along Forest Avenue and made a left turn onto Decker Avenue when he struck Huerta, who at the time was described by the NYPD as a 39-year-old pedestrian…
