Man Sentenced For Deadly Hit-And-Run In Ocean County

BRICK — A South Amboy man has been sentenced to six years in New Jersey State Prison for leaving the scene of a fatal crash that killed a pedestrian in Brick Township last year, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced.

Mark Carey Jr., 21, was sentenced on June 13, 2025, by Superior Court Judge Kimarie Rahill following his April 3 guilty plea to knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in the death of another.

The charge stems from a hit-and-run collision that occurred on January 13, 2024, around 9:15 a.m., in the area of Route 35 South and Bay Avenue. According to investigators, Carey struck 56-year-old Julia Sutton of Weehawken while she was walking on the shoulder of the road. Carey then fled the scene.
