STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — At Beyar’s Market, owner Tommy Beyar has weathered some serious food storms. From the consumer panic of the COVID-19 pandemic to the quirky pickle sandwich craze of 2024, one thing has remained constant — the personal touch of its proprietor and his small, dedicated team.
Located at 2241 Victory Blvd., Beyar’s has a few standouts: distinctive bialy-style onion rolls topped with sautéed onions, house-made banana bread (including a rich chocolate banana variety), and chicken cutlet sandwiches that have earned a loyal following.
Fresh mozzarella is made twice daily in small batches, and their chicken salad — made exclusively with Hellmann’s “extra heavy” mayonnaise — draws fans from as far as New Jersey.
An inventory for every taste
Founded in 1980 after Tommy’s early career at Waldbaum’s, a major supermarket chain, Beyar’s Market began as a hometown business opportunity. Over 43 years later, it has grown into a beloved neighborhood institution, known for its consistency, quality and Beyar’s community work.
The store’s playful motto, “If we don’t have it, you don’t need it,” reflects its broad inventory and response to customer requests.
Deli manager Mike Lacagnina, known for his humor and his belief that “one smile creates 40 smiles,” has seen food trends come and go. He recalls the pickle sandwich craze that started in Long Island — sandwiches served inside hollowed-out pickles instead of bread.
“It kind of faded as fast as it rose, which tells you how weird it really was,” Lacagnina laughs. Still, he embraces a “never yuck another man’s yum” philosophy when it comes to customer preferences.
One regular, stops in almost daily for his signature order: chicken, fried cheese, two eggs, and bacon on a wrap. No judgment — just part of the rhythm of the store.
Rooted in the Community
Beyond its food, Beyar’s Market is deeply woven into the fabric of Staten Island. Tommy is actively involved with three major charities: Kids Against Cancer, South Shore Kiwanis, and Meals on Wheels.
Beyar emphasized, “The Meals on Wheels program delivers 1,200 meals daily across Staten Island. It give people nourishment and a vital connection for the elderly who might otherwise spend the day alone.”
Through the Kiwanis, Beyar’s also prepares 100–130 meals on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter for those spending the holidays without family…
