Staten Island teacher retires after 32 years at school she once attended

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A beloved Staten Island educator is retiring after 32 years of shaping young minds at the same school she attended as a child.

Sabrina Fleming, a kindergarten and pre-K teacher at PS 42 in Eltingville, has been teaching at the school — which also happens to be her alma mater.

This full-circle moment marks the culmination of Fleming’s journey as a student at PS 42 to becoming a teacher. Now, three decades later, she leaves behind a legacy of dedication to Staten Island students and their families.

“I always knew PS 42 was special,” said Fleming, reflecting on her retirement. “It was always more than just a school — it was home. I’ve been incredibly lucky to teach the children of my own neighbors and even, in a few cases, the children of former students. Watching my students learn and grow — and sometimes seeing them years later as successful young adults — has been the honor of a lifetime. This school and this community mean the world to me.”…
