The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) has announced the expansion of enforcement on overweight trucks using weigh-in-motion (WIM) technology.
Starting on June 22, 2025, NYC DOT began issuing $650 violations to overweight Staten Island-bound trucks on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE). Overweight trucks are targeted using WIM technology, or sensors in the roadway, in conjunction with adjacent cameras to capture the identifying information of vehicles that are overweight.
To gear up for the increased enforcement, officials began a 90 day warning period in March 2025. Owners of overweight trucks caught on the BQE headed towards Staten Island received notices but no fines, as well as information on the June 22 enforcement date.
