STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Five new “Portland Loos,“ a futuristic style of public toilets, are open across the five boroughs — including one on Staten Island — marking the first phase of a new citywide public restroom initiative.
Mayor Eric Adams and city Parks Commissioner Iris Rodriguez-Rosa celebrated the openings on Tuesday, which are part of a $6 million pilot project and includes one of the new-style bathrooms in Father Macris Park in Graniteville.
“We’re proud to be rolling out our new, sleek bathrooms across all five boroughs, which will ensure New Yorkers across our city can soak up more of the sun this summer with friends and loved ones without having to worry about where to go when they have to go,” said Adams.
First developed in Portland, Oregon, the “Loo” is a sleek, metallic facility that is easy to maintain and can be installed for a fraction of the price of a traditional restroom, according to the mayor’s office.
