STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Twelve years after their intense arrival into the world, Joseph and Ryan Perrotta returned to the place where their story began, Northwell’s Staten Island University Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
No longer the fragile newborns they once were, the twin boys came back as thriving, joyful pre-teens to celebrate their 12th birthday surrounded by the very team that helped save their lives.
Born prematurely on July 3, 2013, the Perrotta twins entered the world under harrowing circumstances. Joseph, the oldest of the two, weighed just 4 pounds, 5 ounces, and was discharged after five days. But for Ryan, who weighed a mere 1 pound, 10 ounces, his journey was just beginning…
