STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The NYPD is cracking down citywide on cyclists who don’t wear helmets, ride through red lights, travel in the wrong direction on streets and disobey other rules of the road.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced in April that the NYPD was stepping up enforcement against these flagrant violations, and as a result, criminal summonses increased tenfold for such infractions in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the first three months of the year, according to a recent Gothamist report.
