Fire sears Staten Island home during lightning storm: ‘Could’ve been worse’

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — As severe weather moved across Staten Island Thursday afternoon, a fire tore through the roof of a Rossville home — prompting an “all-hands” FDNY response.

Neighbors said they heard a lightning strike nearby just before 3 p.m., and then noticed smoke rising in the back of the Hemlock Lane home.

On the scene, the Advance/SILive.com saw firefighters working on extended ladders to extinguish the flames. The back bedroom and attic of the home was badly charred as firefighters left the scene Thursday…
