STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Colonnade Diner is bringing back its round-the-clock format beginning Oct. 1, marking a new chapter for one of Staten Island’s most iconic eateries.
“Nobody appreciates what I do anymore,” said Markos “Mike” Platis, the 90-year-old owner, reflecting on decades of service.
“I opened the diner in 1975. Back then, it was just a little place. I remember the early days—we had maybe 200 people come in, then another 275 later in the afternoon. It was busy for hours straight,” he reflected.
Platis acknowledged the changing neighborhood and shifting demographics. “That’s life. I’ve been here a long time,” he said. Despite the changes, he’s endured—and now, he’s ready to welcome diners 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Born in Greece, Platis still travels back and forth to his homeland. “I feel good,” he said with a smile…
