STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Heavy rain and high wind pelted Staten Island on Thursday as the borough was hit with a nor’easter-like storm.
It began raining before dawn, though winds and precipitation picked up in intensity as the morning went on, causing outages and knocking down power lines and trees.

- Approximately 500 are without power as of 2:45 p.m., down from a high of about 1,600 earlier in the day;
- Certain vehicles, including empty trailers, have been banned from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge;
- The heaviest downpours are expected late Thursday afternoon into evening.
