Queens Couple and Associate Charged with Grand Larceny in Staten Island Mortgage Fraud

A Queens couple and their associate have been indicted on charges of grand larceny and related offenses in connection with a scheme to obtain a mortgage using falsified documents. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Daniel and Marjorie Fama, along with Benedetto Cupo, are accused of altering bank paperwork to purchase a property in Staten Island.

“As alleged, the defendants falsified bank paperwork to help them buy a property in Staten Island,” District Attorney Katz said in an official statement. According to the indictment, Benedetto Cupo allegedly provided a falsified income verification statement at the request of Daniel Fama. The document was a key factor in Metro City Bank’s decision to approve a $555,000 loan. The bank, which is based in Bayside, was misled by the false information submitted in support of the mortgage application.

The indictment also charges the three defendants with criminal possession of stolen property and conspiracy. They surrendered to authorities earlier today and are scheduled to appear in court on December 16. If convicted, they could face significant prison sentences…
