NYC Second Chance Rescue reached out to animal advocates for help on Wednesday night, with a 911 “puppy” emergency for a collapsed 11-pound dog found on the side of the road by a Good Samaritan.
At first, rescuers thought she was just a puppy, however her teeth indicated she was at least a year old. And her heartbreaking story began to unfold. Her spine was curved; her body had been locked in a permanent hunch, and her skin was burned and raw.
Everyone at the shelter agreed the pup, dubbed Topanga, had likely been kept confined in a small cage for months. Her body had responded to the inhumane conditions by bending and stayed that way. There was little doubt that Topanga had lived her short life thus far in torment and isolation…
